Writing
Writing for a student with physical disabilities is accomplished by determining what their ‘pencil’ is.
A few thoughts on writing:
  • We should consider the purpose of the writing activity. Is it for conventions or for knowledge/comprehension, what I mean by that is do you want to the student to tell you the plot, location, etc or do you want them to write for the purpose of structure?
  • If it is for structure we need to determine what is their pencil. Computer, voice output, specialized writing tool, specialized keyboard, etc.
  • If it is for knowledge/comprehension what other way can they show this? photostory, powerpoint, copy and paste, pointing to pictures provided, etc
  • Talking word processors help with spelling and conventions
  • Journaling - The student can write in a journal using letter by letter spelling, whole word and whole phrases. with the voice output device. Modeling is necessary as with most typically developing students, but the modeling needs to be with the students ‘pencil’.
